Carderock Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWCCD), is committed to introducing students to the work environment by offering students the opportunity to work as a Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) participant. NSWCCD offers participants assignments to its mission and function, which relate to the academic endeavors of the SEAP participant.
NSWCCD professionals stimulate high school students' interest in careers in science and engineering, establish individual working relationships between students and active researchers and scientists, and strengthen the Nation's efforts to recruit and sustain persons for careers in science and engineering, consistent with affirmative action program goals and objectives.
Selected students are placed in a wide variety of scientific and engineering fields with practicing Division professional scientists and engineers. These professionals work with high school students during the summers, to give them a first-hand understanding of professional methods to foster their desire to pursue college-level training that will lead to careers in science and engineering.
Philadelphia Program Requirements:
- Students selected for the program are required to complete the full eight-week apprenticeship. Students work Mondays through Fridays, eight hours per day. Work hours are flexible; students can arrive for work between 6:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and conclude their eight-hour workday between 2:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Students are given a 30-minute lunch break each workday.
- Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the work site.
- At the conclusion of the apprenticeship, students may be required to submit a brief report and deliver a short presentation on their technical project.
- Students who successfully complete the program will receive a tax-free, award of $1500, half of which is distributed at the fourth-week interval of the program and the remainder at the eighth-week interval of the program.
- There are no vacation days given during the apprenticeship. Time missed from the program must be made up, or the award will be forfeited accordingly.
Philadelphia Application Process
- Applicants must be in ninth, tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade at the time the application is submitted. Students will work the summer following their ninth, tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade school year.
- Applicants must have United States citizenship at the time the application is submitted. Students who are selected as apprentices will be required to prove their U.S. citizenship.
Philadelphia Selection Criteria
Applicants will be rated and ranked according to the following criteria:
- Academic grades
- Participation in school and community activities
- Interest in and experience with math, science and computers
- Personal attributes, such as leadership, initiative, interest in learning new ideas and skills
- Interest in pursuing a math or science based career
Top-ranking applicants may be selected for an interview. All applicants will be notified by mail of the results of the rating process by the spring.
